Hibiki’s Internship Blog – Day 10

Kayak Training Day 3

Hi, my name is Hibiki and I’m doing an internship at Evergreen Outdoor Center in Hakuba.

On June 14th, I participated in the kayaking training with other new staff, and it was the last day of the training. We practiced three fundamental strokes, towing other kayaks and T-Rescues.

As we have built confidence in a kayak, we have become better at towing and T-Rescues.

Also, we tried to do an “Eskimo Roll” and practiced the technique.  An Eskimo Roll is an advanced kayaking skill that allows you to right yourself if you flip over by using your paddle and body.

The purpose of the kayaking training is to teach kayaking skills and guiding knowledge to the trainees so that they can guide customers safely with those techniques. Even after the training, the trainees still needed to work on their paddling skills and self-rescue techniques.

We are trying to improve our kayaking skills much more so that our customers are able to enjoy the tours safely and our guides have the confidence and ability to handle all situations.

On the third day of the training, there were no waves on Lake Aokiko because the weather was so nice. Lake Aokiko was so beautiful! The surface of the lake was like a mirror, and it reflects the beautiful mountains and the sky!!

If you are lucky, you can see the scenery like the picture above!!!
