Hibiki’s Internship Blog – Day 20

Summer Camp :  Water Wizards

Hi, my name is Hibiki and I’m doing an internship at Evergreen Outdoor Center in Hakuba.

On July 5th, I helped with the Summer Camp Water Wizards which was Day 3 of the camp.

Water Wizards is a 5-day camp to discover and learn about the cycle of water. Campers will learn about the natural cycle of water though taking part in thought provoking and physically challenging activities on crystal clear lakes and rivers with in Hakuba Valley and a day long field trip along the length of the Himekawa River to where it meets with the Sea of Japan.

In the morning, the campers made pancakes by themselves and then ate the  delicious pancakes as a breakfast. Some of the kids had never made pancakes before, so the staff taught them how to make pancakes. The most difficult thing for the campers while making pancakes was to flip the pancake.

After they had the breakfast, they built mini hydroelectric power generators, and they tested it out and saw that the water from the stream actually generated electricity.

The generators generated electricity when they put water pressure on the turbine, and the lights and the speaker on the generator started working. They learned how powerful water pressure was and how to generate electricity from water.

In the afternoon, we went lake rafting and kayaking at Lake Aokiko. In these activities, they jumped from the raft and swam in the lake, and they enjoyed the lake so much. All the campers were able to see how much fun you can have in clean water of Aokiko.

Evergreen provides lifejackets to all participants of the lake activates, so if your child cannot swim, they still can participate in the lake activities safely.

In the end of the day, we held the pizza party, and the campers spread the pizza dough, put sauce and ingredients, and put it in the pizza oven by themselves.

The pizza oven makes pizzas crispier and cheese more delicious, so the campers enjoyed crispy pizzas with melted cheese and had a lot of them.
