Hakuba Snow Report – 9th Jan 2012

Weather conditions: Cloud, snow
New snowfall: <5cm (village)
Snow depth: 95cm (Village); 215cm (Top of Goryu)
It has been a snowy morning in Hakuba. When I woke up at around 6am this morning there was about 5cm of snow on the top of the car, and looking at resorts they are reporting between 5cm and 10cm of fresh snow overnight. It has been snowing all morning but not the kind of snow that builds up significan cm… it’s just kind of… snowing. So I don’t thing we can expect it to make much difference to the snow depths out there. New fresh flakes on the mountains are always welcome though, of course.Because of the snow and the clouds covering the mountains, visibility on the hills has not been the best this morning, though it will have been fine in the trees. I’d say that today is definitely a good low light lens day.

Right now it is hovering around 0 degrees in the village.

It is gradually improving though as the day progresses and the snow clouds will probably have cleared up by this evening. A cloudy night is forecast but tomorrow it looks like we might get to see the sun again with clearer skies. The snow looks set to be back by the evening though and then a decent snowfall is currently forecast for Wednesday. The wind will hopefully behave but like I have been mentioning, it looks like those slabs formed by the westerly wind are getting sketchy. So need to be careful if you are going up to BC area.
