Hakuba Snow Report – 15th Dec 2011

Weather conditions: Partially cloudy
New snowfall: 0 cm
Snow depth: 0-1cm (village); 45cm (Top of Goryu)

The weather has turned a bit balmy and windy this morning. It was also raining slightly this morning, but now it looks like the sun is trying to break through. The forecast is calling for snow to arrive late this evening, then continue to snow all day Friday. Saturday is looking like some cold temperatures are rolling in and more snow as well, and beyond that mid-next week is looking very promising. We are nearly there, I’d say.

With high winds on many of the resorts today, the gondolas may be closed until the winds subsides.

Snow conditions on the hill yesterday were packed powder and crud with some moguls forming. The warmer temperatures also made it somewhat spring snow which then hardened up and froze overnight.

Conditions on the runs now are still variable – snow is shallow, lots of rocks, shrubs etc. Remember, what looks like powder may not be that deep at all.

Hopefully that will all change quite soon.

Currently open resorts are Goryu (just Alps Dai ichi pair lift), Hakuba 47 (line 8), Happo One (just the Kurobishi Quad and Usagidaira Pair Lift) and Tsugaike Resort (upper lift only). You will need to ride the gondola to access the open runs on all the resorts now.

The resorts are giving discounted tickets until the rest of the runs open.
