Hakuba Snow Report – 10th Jan 2012

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 0cm (village)
Snow depth: 95cm (Village); 215cm (Top of Goryu)
Good morning everybody.

Yesterday conditions cleared up a bit by mid-afternoon and we even saw some sunlight over the village for a while, though lots of cloud remained up on the mountains.

It was one of those mornings where it’s easy to get out of bed as it didn’t feel that cold. The temperature in the valley this morning was around -3 to -1 and there has been no overnight snow in the village, though both Goryu and Hakuba Cortina resorts are reporting up to 5cm of freshly fallen snow on the slopes and 47 is reporting 7cm.

The weather should stay generally cloudy today until later tonight with 1 to 2 m/s of light SW to W wind in the valley and mostly foggy up on the hills with -7 to -5C with 1 to 2 m/s, NW to SW wind. It looks like the clouds may stay on the hills for most of the day with this calm wind. Having said that, there’s a definite hint of blue sky behind the cloud up there in some places and it looks like some of the upper slopes have got some sun on them at the moment. So perhaps a day of changeable conditions.

The forecast is looking good… starting tonight, or overnight if there’s any ‘delay’, it should be snowing in the village, and we can look forward to a good amount of snowfall tomorrow into Thursday morning. It seems like the temperature should stay nice and cold too. After that clearer conditions look likely for Thursday.

Be carful with snow stability when you are out in the BC area – this up and down with temperatures is a recipe for slides.

Stay safe, and enjoy the snow.
