A nice surprise today here in Hakuba with at least 10-15cm of new snow in the valley. Currently it is overcast and it is snowing lightly. Cold temperatures have turned what was rain at lower elevations to snow, and also firmed up and slushy areas from the last 2 days.
Conditions on the resorts today will be chopped powder, packed powder and groomers. Skiers and boarders should be aware the 10cm of new snow will be sitting on hard rain crust on all aspects, take care as what may look soft might not be. Some icy conditions out there. The forecast is calling for continued snow throughout the day and then turning to partly sunny days on the weekend. With temperatures staying below zero we hope it will keep what new snow we have as light and dry as possible…. Travel Advisory: Stay out of the backcounrty, stay to the groomed piste or make it a clean up the house and have an onsen day. But if you must go into the backcountry stay to very low angle slopes, stick to the ridges and be aware of hazards above you. Stay well back from cornices as they are heavy and will step back at least twice as big. Avalanche Hazard: Alpine: High Official resort snow depths on 12th Feb 10: Happo-one: |
