Hakuba Highland unfortunately has felt the pain of less snowfall and a decline in the number of local tourists and from 2009-2010 the lifts are not running. The views from here are amazing and on a clear day their onsen has the best view overlooking Hakuba; and the resort area is still open for sledding and playing in the snow.
Situated on the other side of the big resorts, Hakuba Highland has the finest views of the mountains and also makes a great place to snowshoe and cross-country ski. There is nothing resort like about this mountain, and that is what makes it popular with those who think of skiing as a chance to get into nature and enjoy solitude. Hakuba Highland also has a great outdoor hot spring that looks over the mountains, and the prices for lodging and dining are also lower.
