Downriver in Nagano

Downriver in Nagano

For those who have always wanted to try downriver canoeing or kayaking in Japan, here is your chance. Let Evergreen’s professional instructors teach you what you need to know to have an unforgettable downriver canoe or kayak experience.

CANOE & KAYAK DOWNRIVER TOURS

On our 2-day tours, we spend the first day on Lake Aoki learning paddling and downriver technique. By Day 2 we will have you piloting your own canoe or kayak down one of Nagano’s largest rivers – the Sai River. This is a grade one river, perfect for beginners and families.

On the 1-day tour, we give you a crash course in river paddling and run a shorter, easier section of the Sai River – a great downriver intro experience.

Downriver 1-Day Tour

downriver kayakOn the 1-Day Downriver Tour, we spend the morning at Lake Aoki practicing and training river paddling and safety skills. After lunch at the lake, we travel to the Sai River (around a 45 minute drive) and run a short section. This is more of a “crash-course”, and is recommended for those who have already got the basic flat-water paddling techniques.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CANOE & KAYAK?

Canoe refers to Canadian Canoes, 2-person open canoes that you sit inside as you can see on the photos on this page. Piloting these downriver involves working as a pair with another person and some practice is necessary to get comfortable with each other, as well as with general paddling techniques and river skills. If you flip you need to work to pull the canoe to the side in a quiet section of the river and drain out the water.

Kayak means a single person kayak which you sit inside. These can be paddled with or without a skirt, which is basically a cover that stops water getting inside. Skilled paddlers can use paddle techniques such as the eskimo roll to right themselves even after flipping upside-down, provided they are wearing a skirt. If they fail to roll, or if they don’t have a skirt, they must pull the kayak to the side and drain out the water.

WHAT ABOUT BAD WEATHER?

If on the day the water level is found to be too high, EOC reserves the right to cancel the tour. In this case alternate dates may be offered or full refunds will be made.
