We are centrally located and long time members of the Hakuba community. Our office is in Wadano-no-mori, in the Wadano Visitor Center, a 5-minute walk to Happo-one (1998 Winter Olympics).
We are a Canadian/Japanese company, with staff coming from all over the world, and collectively we have cutting edge knowledge in mountain sports and taking-it-easy.
Our dedicated team have years of wisdom between them, and are happy to give helpful advice on getting around in Japan and how to make the most of your time.
›› Winter Lessons & Tours
Our "kids camp" ski school puts the emphasis on fun first, then from building confidence on the snow to high-speed carves and parallel turns. Our kids camp is open from 3 years of age and our snowboard school from 6. We also offer day-care for children from 18 months.
We are the only ski school in Hakuba with native English instructors. Our ski school instructors are certified to teach lessons and are all fully-trained in first aid. Evergreen chooses ski instructors who have extensive experience guiding and teaching, who are responsible, and who are fun to be with. We offer the next steps for any skier/snowboarder: learn how to ride in powder, get bigger air, jump off big cliffs, or we can help you put on your boots and make your first turns.
If you can walk you can snowshoe; see the best views of Hakuba and escape the crowds with a guided forest snowshoe tour. We make an easy outing for a family and you couldn't do it cheaper by yourself. We also offer evening snowshoe & fondue tours, a nice way to spend an evening with family or friends! The walk is not strenuous, but just enough to work up an appetite for dessert fondue in a specially crafted snow shelter called a Kamakura in Japanese. It is not unusual to see wild badgers, rabbits, fox, mink and Kamoshika (Japanese mountain goat) while hiking on our tours.
You can customize a snowboard or ski tour with professional guides into Hakuba's backcountry. All the gear you need can be rented or purchased from Evergreen. Our backcountry tours vary by ability, and for our advanced tours into steep powder country, we require that you have prior experience on a tour with us, and that you are physically fit.
Whether you are joining Evergreen for a backcountry tour or wanting to head out into the Backcountry of the Japanese Alps with your friends, the Evergreen Outdoor Center has everything you will need to make your tour safe and a success. Some of the brands that we carry are SOS (Survival on Snow) avalanche beacons, probes and shovels, G3, Backcountry Access, Prior Split boards, Powder skis and skins as well as Haglofs packs to comfortably carry all your safety gear in and out of the winter mountains of Japan.
Evergreen offers avalanche training courses from first-time backcountry tours to Level 1 certification (CAA). Check out the times and dates for more info and if the dates don't fit your schedule, gather a group of 6 and we can make a special schedule for you.
Every day in Winter, Evergreen staff research and make detailed reports about the snow conditions and snow stability in Hakuba.
Our reports are not a substitute for taking proper precautions before heading into the backcountry, and we strongly stress that only those with the proper gear and training and experience to use it travel into the backcountry; and to know the area or be with someone who knows the area well before traveling off-piste. The weather reporters and snow stability forecasters at Evergreen are professional and passionate about what they do and make it their goal to provide the most
accurate accounts of the conditions in the Hakuba Valley, but this is no substitute for undergoing proper avalanche skills training.
You could spend a week doing relaxing things not involving sweat or gear. Go to a different art gallery and coffee shop each day; the Hakuba Museum of Art has over 90 original Chagall works. And with the many hot springs (some private), it is easy to spend your days warm and enjoying the peace and quiet of your children being somewhere else.
We had a great season 2007-2008, and its never too early to make plans for the 2008-2009 ski season. Check out Ski Hakuba for more info
Hakuba has ski hotels, pensions, and lodges throughout the 20km valley. Choose from luxury hotels with full ski service to budget hotels and lodges. The Hakuba accommodation links we provide have English and Japanese hotel staff. You can save money and get the best discount lodging in Hakuba by making reservations early. Most Hakuba lodging providers offer shuttle service (good to ask in advance), otherwise ask if the hotel is on a bus line. Evergreen is in Wadano-no-mori, next to Happo-one Kokusai lift (5-minute walk), across from the Mominoki Hotel, and a stones' throw from La Neige, Morino Lodge, and . . .
Jam-Off 2008 went down in Hakuba from the 13th-15th of September 2008. We were blessed with good weather for all but the very start of the event; thanks to all our Sponsors, all the DJ's, musicians, stall-holders and everybody who came out and enjoyed the weekend! We had DJ's, live music, MTB workshops, a SK8 workshop and jam, live graffiti workshops and painting, yoga, good food; all at the base of the Northern Japan Alps. We're already looking forward to next years party and plan more promotion, more DJS and live acts, more workshops and food vendors, more local support and more headz rocking! Check some photos from this years event scribed in our Summer Journal.
